Benefits of Membership

Benefits of membership in the EHR Association are available to any HIMSS Corporate Member that develops, deploys, and supports EHRs in the US. Your organization will:

  • Gain insights and information on legislation and regulatory initiatives, including opportunities to meet with legislators and policymakers for advocacy purposes.
  • Take advantage of educational programs on new standards, certification requirements, quality and pay-for-performance driven programs, and other initiatives that impact your business and your customers.
  • Network with peers from other EHR companies to develop positions on issues that impact our entire industry.
  • Leverage EHR Association materials to educate your colleagues and customers on the latest government and industry programs that are driving EHR adoption and use.
  • Position your organization as a thought leader through participation in a variety of EHR Association Workgroups, Committees, and Task Forces that develop public comments on legislation and regulations, white papers, and position statements.

From its inception, the EHR Association has pursued a leadership balance between EHR companies that serve large integrated delivery systems and those that focus solely on the ambulatory market. From the chair and vice-chair, through the workgroup structure and the executive committee, there is equal representation from both types of companies to ensure all perspectives are represented as we set priorities, develop positions, and meet with industry leaders and policymakers to discuss EHR-related issues. Participation from all member companies is encouraged, and these opportunities are open to everyone.

The Electronic Health Record (EHR) Association has, since its inception in 2004, provided opportunities for its members to engage in multi-stakeholder initiatives to further our shared mission to accelerate the adoption of EHRs in the US. We have common objectives to support the broad deployment of standards-based, interoperable EHRs for the betterment of healthcare delivery for all Americans. Examples of our contributions and successes include:

  • The EHR Association is the “go to” resource for experience and expertise on the potential impacts of EHRs on healthcare quality and efficiency. Called on by Congress, state legislators, regulators, and industry stakeholders from all sectors, the Association has provided written and oral testimony, education and outreach, and pragmatic advice as health IT has been recognized as a pivotal element in the reform of the US healthcare system.   • Publication of the first Interoperability Roadmap in 2005, now in its third edition, which lays out a pragmatic approach to achieving interoperability among disparate health IT systems, based on HITSP-recommended standards. We have provided education to individuals from member companies to ensure that we deliver on the promise of interoperable EHRs across the continuum of care, the community, state boundaries and, eventually, the nation. 
  • Support of EHR certification initiatives, from CCHIT’s early efforts to the certification system that has become a permanent aspect of our industry. EHR Association members have served in leadership roles to define the processes, and our workgroups continue to provide detailed input on certification requirements to ensure that certified functionality delivers meaningful benefits to our customers.
  • Publication of The Value of Electronic Health Records, a compendium of case studies that document the achievement of objective, quantifiable, and quality-related benefits through the use of a variety of EHR systems. 
  • Development of Quick Start Guides for CCD and CDA/CRS clinical data exchange standards, as well as educational events for developers from member companies. These documents are publicly available as well, in keeping with the Association’s practice of supporting its members and all industry stakeholders in our collaborative efforts to encourage adoption of health IT.   • A variety of white papers and position statements on important topics, from “meaningful use” to privacy. This content is a rich resource for not only EHR Association member companies but for all industry stakeholders seeking to understand the issues and broad impacts of health IT on the care delivery process and system.  Just select the “Resource Center” tab on our web site at www.ehra.org.
  • Serve on the EHR Association Executive Committee. Through a formal election process, a chair and vice chair along with six individuals are chosen by the membership to serve on the Executive Committee. This collaboration with leaders from peer organizations provides an unprecedented opportunity to lead and influence the industry.
